B3Africa (Bridging Biobanking and Biomedical research across Europe and Africa) is a H2020 funded project creating a collaboration framework and an informatics platform to empower research collaboration between Africa and Europe. The collaboration framework provides an ethical and regulatory system to enable a controlled sharing of bio-resources, data and knowledge between the two continents. The informatics platform integrates open-source software in workflows that cover: biobanking, experiments management, bioinformatics, harmonization and standardization and data sharing. The platform can be integrated with e-Infrastructures for big data storage and analysis. A training and educational system is also integrated into the platform, covering: ethics and regulations, biobanking and biomedical research as well as the technical use of the informatics platform. The final product of the B3Africa project is the eB3Kit; a powered computer for managing processes related to biobanking, experimentation and bioinformatics, among others. The eB3Kit can be deployed as a desktop computer, can be cloned, can be deployed as a virtual server, can be operated off-line and can be integrated to e-infrastructures for big data storage and analysis. This informatics platform can be easily adopted by research institutions and organizations carrying out biobanking and biomedical research.
